Our Pathways Pledge Ceremony at the Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School on August 1, with over 500 people attending.
Students from all five Beacon schools, along with sponsors, supporters and members of the community joined together to celebrate the Real Futures program.
This year’s keynote address was delivered by Ben Welch, who shared the powerful story behind his decision to take on the 444 Run, a gruelling 380km trek from Mildura Hospital back to Echuca. Ben spoke with honesty and courage about the family heartbreak that inspired him, the immense physical challenges he faced, and the unwavering support he received from family, friends, and the broader community. His efforts not only moved hearts but also raised an extraordinary amount of funds for headspace, far surpassing his original target and continuing to grow today.
Following Ben’s keynote, students heard from a discussion panel of alumni who reflected on their own journeys beyond school. The panel featured Fletcher Harris (Echuca College), Rebecca Harris (St Joseph’s College), Kate Mulcahy (Moama Anglican Grammar), and Zach Phyland (Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School). Each shared their diverse pathways and offered valuable insights and advice for students considering their own futures.
The panel was facilitated by Beacon Leaders Daniel Adriaans (St Joseph’s College) and Sophie McKee (Echuca College), while Emily Law (Moama Anglican Grammar) and Anthony Evans (Australian Christian College) confidently MC’d the ceremony. All other Beacon Leaders played an integral role in welcoming guests, ushering, and supporting the smooth running of the event, showcasing teamwork, professionalism, and leadership throughout the day.
A highlight of the ceremony was the signing of the Pathways Pledge by Beacon leaders as representatives of their student peers, school leaders, sponsors and community representatives.
The Pathways Pledge is a public commitment, where students acknowledge that they are ready to make the most of their futures, and that they will have open minds when considering their career pathways.
